SHERIFF CLYDE G. AYERS 

1971 - 1975 

Clyde G. "C.G." Ayers was born in Franklin County, Alabama, on May 11, 1922.

Upon returning from service overseas in World War II, C.G. started his law enforcement career in the early 1940's as the lone policeman of Hodges, Alabama. He became a police officer in Red Bay, AL, before moving to the same position in Russellville.

From there, he served as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Stratt Byars in Franklin County, AL. He spent a brief period of time as conservation officer in Franklin and Greene counties in Alabama.

Mr. Ayers began his law enforcement service in the Shoals area in 1956 when he accepted a position as policeman for the City of Sheffield, rising in the ranks of the department.

During the tenure of Raymond Wheeler as Colbert County Sheriff, C.G. served as Chief Deputy.

In the early 1960's, he was selected to serve the City of Muscle Shoals, AL, concluding as Chief of Police. He spent nine years at Muscle Shoals, and was elected Colbert County Sheriff in 1970. Governor Albert Brewer commissioned him as Colbert County Sheriff on December 7, 1970.
